Northern Roses in Southern Climate

Abstract

In the collection of rose gardens in Arboretum Volčji Potok, Slovenia, they take care for about 1250 rose varieties. Among them, there are some dozens of roses that were bred in northern Europe or Canada or are found roses from there. After ten years of observation of their growth and flowering it is possible to make conclusions how they perform in long, warm and humid climate on the sunny side of the Alps. Some northern roses are valuable for their early vegetation which brings rose flowers three weeks earlier to the main flowering season. A group of northern roses has problems with leaf health, while others perform very well. An interesting phenomenon is the stability of petals’ color under the stronger insolation on lower latitude. The lecture is based on the practical experience from Arboretum Volčji Potok.
